How this ranking is built
Six audited pillars: access, representation, offer parity, belonging, outcomes-equity and staff diversity.
Data. UCAS End of Cycle 2024 · OfS access & participation · NSS 2025 · HESA staff 2024/25.
Read with care. Devolved-nation universities are scored on fewer pillars, since some outcomes data is England-only.
How this compares to QS, the Guardian, THE and the rest
The famous league tables each answer a different question. Each one hands you a single number with the priorities already chosen. Here is what they measure and where we differ.
| Ranking | What it measures | Best for | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| QS World | Global reputation surveys, research citations and international mix. | Worldwide research standing. | Around half the score is reputation, so it rewards fame. Little about UK undergraduate life. |
| Times Higher Education | Research power, income and reputation, worldwide. | Comparing research-intensive institutions. | Teaching is a small, proxy-based slice. Built for academics, not applicants. |
| The Guardian | Satisfaction, staff-student ratio, spend, entry grades and value added. | What undergraduate life actually feels like. | No research measure. Still one blended score you cannot re-weight. |
| Complete University Guide | Entry standards, satisfaction, research quality and graduate prospects. | A rounded UK shortlist. | Entry standards and research tilt it toward the prestigious. One fixed recipe. |
| Times / Sunday Times | A similar all-round blend, editorially curated. | A trusted general guide. | One combined ranking with the weightings chosen for you. |
Where we differ. Every table above collapses a university into a single number, with the priorities chosen for you and often a heavy dose of reputation. We publish no single number. We publish 21 measures built only from official government data, with no opinion surveys and no editorial thumb on the scale. You pick the measure and the weighting. And we rank things the others leave out completely. Diversity, disability support, value after rent, public-service destinations, even how AI-exposed the graduate jobs are.
